The science behind spray foam insulation is simple: the second law of thermodynamics states that heat flows from warm to cold places. Without proper insulation, this flow causes high utility bills and uncomfortable living spaces. Spray foam is an insulation that fills in cracks and crevices, making it difficult for heat to move through walls and ceilings. When sprayed onto the surface of your building, spray foam insulation forms little pockets of trapped gas called cells that slow down the movement of heat. For this reason, some builders and designers are staying away from HFC-based spray foam insulation and opting for cellulose or mineral wool. Fortunately, Demilec and other spray foam manufacturers now offer HFOs, such as Solstice Liquid Blowing Agent from Honeywell, that have a much lower GWP.
