Black Children’s Books
If you are a parent of an African American child, it’s important to find books that teach African American culture. These books will not only teach about history and culture, but will also foster racial identity. You can find a wide variety of children’s books on the App Store, which includes a wide selection of Black children’s books.
Many books highlighting Black history and culture have come from African American authors. While white authors like Ezra Jack Keats have also contributed to this genre, a number of African American authors have made an effort to teach young children about African American culture. Many of these books weave historical facts with stories of everyday kids doing everyday activities.
Another resource for finding books featuring Black authors and illustrators is the Black Children’s Books and Authors site. This website provides the latest book releases by Black authors and illustrators and hosts cover reveal events. It also provides a comprehensive guide to the different types of children’s books written by African-Americans. It also boosts social media posts by authors and is planning to host its own book fest.
The book “Swing Sisters” by Karen Dean tells the story of a girls’ swing band. The band was created by girls from the Piney Woods Country Life School, a school for African Americans largely orphans. The band went on to become one of the first integrated women’s bands in the United States. The group performed at top music venues and toured the world. This book will teach your child about the history and culture of African Americans and inspire them to pursue their own dreams.
