In the second month of treatment, these percentages rose slightly to 78.9% and 69.4%, respectively.

The researchers found that CBD may boost the levels of a molecule in the body called anandamide, which is known to promote sleep. Additionally, CBD may interact with the CB1 receptors in the brain, spine and gut that regulate pain transmission, anxiety, inflammation and circadian rhythm.

However, the research also shows that it takes time for CBD to work. In Shannon’s study, people whose main complaint was insomnia saw their symptoms improve in the first month of treatment, but the improvements faded in months two and three. Similarly, in animal experiments, CBD increased NonREM sleep but did not affect Intermediate or REM sleep and did not alter the number of sleep stage transitions.
